Ask how many total kilometres are included, and the charge per extra kilometre.

When not to self-drive
- Winter snow season on routes above 2,500 m — chains, black ice and uncleared sections.
- First-time hill driving with a low-clearance car — the last 30–60 km are often single lane with drop walls.
- Monsoon travel in gorge sections, where landslide risk changes daily.
- Any itinerary where you want to stop at viewpoints — a local driver knows which ones are open.
